Thursday groundbreaking planned for light-rail extension

Construction on the extension of the LYNX Blue Line light rail from uptown to the UNC Charlotte campus will break ground Thursday.

Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff and Gov. Pat McCrory will join Mayor Patsy Kinsey and other local leaders to celebrate the groundbreaking of the $1.1 billion project.

The event will take place at 10 a.m. at 228 East Ninth Street across the street from the Ninth Street station.

The extension will double the length of the light rail system, significantly expanding transit options for thousands of residents and students. It will also create new development opportunities along the line.
