Tijuana FlatsThe Dilworth area will be another new Tex Mex spot by the end of the year. Tijuana Flats Burrito Co. plans to open at 1608 East Blvd. in the former The Original Italian Pie spot. Hand-rolled, toasted burritos and chimichangas are on the menu in three sizes from the Minijuana up to the Megajuana. Other options include fresh, made to order tacos, enchiladas and flautas. Chips, queso, guacamole and a Little Lizards menu for kids are also on tap. Catering from box lunches to bulk burritos and tacos will be available to order both online and over the phone. Located next to Cru in the same development as Sticky Fingers and Hickory Tavern off of Johnston Road, the spot offers both lunch and dinner specials with or without meat, and all including a spring roll and soup or salad. A look at the menu finds hibachi with choice of meat and rice, a number of sautéed teriyaki dishes, pud Thai: rice noodles sautéed with egg, bean sprouts scallions, ground peanut and Thai spices with a choice of protein and Bento boxes. The specialties include Siam beef, steamed or grilled ginger fish, crispy duck and volcano fish: red snapper fried then served with mangoes, asparagus, broccoli and tomatoes. Dessert options include fried ice cream, seasonal mango and sweet rice and a fried banana served with ice cream. The newest store has 2500 square feet with 110 seats inside and 46 outside on a covered patio. Wine list will be mostly French. The spot’s claim to fame is Belgian Liege waffles made with brioche dough and Belgian pearl sugar. The waffles are cooked in a cast iron waffle press, caramelizing the exterior yet keeping the inside soft.
