Flying into shape & getting moms moving

Meghan Lee, 30 of South Park, began working for Flywheel last summer as a cycle instructor after having taken classes and getting the "Flywheel addiction!” Meghan completed her training program shortly after her second daughter’s birth. Keep reading to learn how you can get back to your pre-pregnancy shape.

Q. What all do you do at Flywheel and Flybarre?

A. I am a cycling instructor and a barre instructor, so I'm responsible for planning out a fresh new playlist for each class, mapping out the ride to be on beat with my playlist, and planning out the barre class so we're not doing the same exercises each class to keep our clients challenged. As instructors, we spend much more time planning outside of the gym than we do instructing to ensure the best classes possible for our clients.

Q. What is the Flywheel and Flybarre experience?

A. The "Fly" experience starts before you even walk through the door. You create an online account which will automatically deposit a free Flywheel class credit in your account. You include things such as your shoe size and create a "Torq Board" name which helps personalize the class experience for you.

You can then select which class time or instructor you'd like and reserve your bike ahead of time so there's no waiting outside the studio door, fighting the crowd to get a bike! When you arrive, you will log into the computers at the front to "check-in" and find your cycling shoes in your cubby waiting for you. At this time you can select to include your "Torq Board" name to be displayed on the screens in the cycle room, which allows you to compete with other riders in class. It's another way we at Flywheel push you to your best every time!

Reserving a Flybarre class is the same - you select your class time or instructor and then pick which mat you would like to be on. When you arrive you also "check-in" at the front and then proceed to the barre room to find your mat waiting for you.

Our staff are trained to set you up properly, so there really is no experience required!

Q. You recently had a daughter, what tips do you have for new moms who are trying Flywheel?

A. My number one tip for any new mom is don't be so hard on yourself! We all strive to be everything to everyone and we hold ourselves to an impossible standard. It's intimidating walking into a gym, period, let alone after you've just had a baby. Yes, there will always be a Suzy Six-pack in class, but Flywheel has clients of every shape and size.

Again, because you're working out in a dark room, you're not spending your entire workout wondering how you look or if anyone's watching you. I've heard people say they need to get in shape before they take a class, and that's just not true. If you can peddle a bike, you can take a Flywheel class. We'll get you back in shape and you'll have a blast doing it! It's so important for your physical and mental health, especially with a newborn in the house. We all need to carve that time for ourselves.

Q. How does cycling help get your body back to post-baby shape?

A. A Flywheel ride is an intense, interval workout designed to burn the most amount of calories in the 45 minutes you're on the bike. The unique thing about Flywheel is that it becomes a full body workout when we add the upper body toning component near the end of the ride. Your instructor will guide you through a 5 minute arm sequence with 2 and 4 lb. weighted bars that will exhaust your arm and shoulder muscles, so we don't leave anything out!

It's low impact which is great for new moms as their bodies readjust after birth. We also keep the cycling room dark, so you can really make it your own workout, adjusting your resistance and speed as you go. It can be very intimidating to get back to the gym after birth, with the bright, unforgiving fluorescent lights of traditional gyms, but we get rid of that so you can focus on your workout and shut the rest out.

Like I tell most new riders, no one knows what your resistance or speed is but you, so adjust what the instructor tells you as needed. You'll get stronger with each ride, and with strength comes results!

Q. What do you recommend for new moms to try first- Flywheel, Flybarre or both?

A. I truly feel that Flywheel and Flybarre are such crucial parts to a well rounded workout regimen because you're getting both the cardiovascular workout from Flywheel and the strength training from Flybarre. I would encourage new moms to get involved with both workouts - maybe 3 Flywheel classes and 2 Flybarre classes per week, once they get cleared from their doctor to participate in an exercise program again. However, each woman and their pregnancy is different. Most doctors will not clear you to start cycling again until 6 weeks postpartum, and quite honestly, I'm not sure most moms would want to sit on that saddle until that time anyway! In my case though, I was cleared by my doctor to start Flybarre the week after delivering and just listened to my body and did what I could.

Q. What are your rates?

A. The best part is that your first Flywheel class is free! So, there's no commitment and no pressure, we just want you to try it out! After that, there are different options for purchasing packages or single classes. A single class is $18, 5 classes for $80, 10 classes for $150, or 20 classes for $280. Rates are the same for both Flywheel and Flybarre.

Q. What makes Flybarre and Flywheel different than your normal cycle and sculpting classes?

A. I could say that it's the technology and the ability to track your ride progress from class to class through your online account, or that in barre that we have a choreographed "dynamic arms" section that keeps it new and interesting every three weeks, but really it's a combination of everything, including the instructors. It is the complete experience that just makes you want to come back for more. Every instructor loves their job and it shows in the dedication, drive and energy they bring to each class.
