Ramadan ends on joyful note

Wearing native attire from dozens of countries, thousands of Charlotte area Muslims gathered Thursday morning to pray and celebrate Eid al-Fitr.

The joyous holiday marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and repentance, and the beginning of three days of communal meals and gift-giving.

The diverse group filed into The Park, formerly known as the Merchandise Mart, where they wished each other “Eid Mubarak” (Happy Eid) and then prostrated themselves on prayer rugs.

Sheik Bassam Obeid, the head imam at the Islamic Center of Charlotte, led the prayers in Arabic.

“It’s sort of like our religious family reunion,” Islamic Center of Charlotte spokesman Jibril Hough said about the Eid get-together. “A lot of embracing of people you maybe had not seen in a long time.” Tim Funk
