2 missing hikers located in Burke County, are OK

Two hikers who had been the subject of a search for 12 hours in the rugged terrain of northern Burke County were found Wednesday morning and are OK, authorities say.

The hikers – a 22-year-old woman and an 80-year-old man – had gotten separated from the woman’s mother during a hike Tuesday in the Upper Creek Falls area near Linville Gorge. Burke County authorities say the woman’s mother had stopped for a rest, while her daughter and the man, a friend of the family, had kept hiking.

When the woman could not find her daughter and the man, she sought help.

Crews searched for several hours late Tuesday night in the Jonah Ridge area, then resumed the search Wednesday morning. It is not clear where the missing hikers were found.
