Duke Energy, in a radio campaign that started Monday, is warning customers across its six-state territory about a telephone scam involving prepaid debit cards.
The scam begins when a customer gets a phone call, allegedly from a Duke representative. The caller warns that Duke will disconnect service, usually within an hour, if the customer doesn’t make a payment.
The caller tells the customer to buy a prepaid debit card and call back with the card’s receipt and PIN numbers, which grant access to the card’s account. New tactics may include caller-ID “spoofing” to replicate Duke’s customer service number or claims that the caller is a collection agency. Some callers target Spanish-speaking customers.
Duke says it never asks customers who are behind on payments to buy debit cards. Customers receive many notifications over several weeks before service is disconnected.
Customers who suspect fraud should hang up and call police, Duke said, then the company. Duke Energy Carolinas customers should call 800-777-9898, Duke Energy Progress customers 800-452-2777.
