Duke Energy halts Davidson bridge work

DAVIDSON

Duke Energy has ordered the town to stop work on replacing the pedestrian bridge along Griffith Street at Roosevelt Wilson Park.

Davidson began the project in early August, but Duke Energy is requiring the town to apply for a permit that allows activity within a federally licensed hydro-electric project, because the pond is technically part of Lake Norman, Town Manager Leamon Brice said.

Two federal, five state and two local agencies must review the application, Brice said. That could take up to a year, he said.

The town, meanwhile, will provide traffic barricades to allow safe pedestrian passage along Griffith Street, Brice said.

“We regret this unanticipated delay, and are working to meet permit requirements and provide an improved causeway, as soon as possible,” Brice said in a news release announcing the delay.
