Charlotte-area teens Haley Tan, left, Smiti Kaul and Pooja Kanabur help at a Book Blitz summer fundraiser recently held by Promising Pages, a Charlotte nonprofit that collects and distributes new and gently used books to local families.
The three were among dozens of volunteers who took leadership roles as members of Promising Pages' Team Read 2013, said project director Brennan Shearer. They helped raise money at the Book Blitz for the organization's first audit. The goal of the audit is for Promising Pages, a 2-year-old charity, to apply for bigger funding and have a greater impact.
Shearer said Jensen Anderson (Myers Park High), Calla Bodnar (South Mecklenburg) and Jackson Jones (Myers Park) were top leaders for the Book Blitz and Team Read efforts.
During the summer, members of Team Read (sponsored by the Dale Earnhardt Foundation) sorted, stamped and wrapped thousands of books that they gave to area kids at more than 100 Charlotte early literacy events. Leaders also collected books in their neighborhoods.
