Charlotte 49ers coach Brad Lambert (center), noseguard Larry Ogunjobi (65) and quarterback Matt Johnson (8) lead the Charlotte 49ers into their first football season, which begins Saturday against Campbell at Richardson Stadium.

The wait is over for Charlotte 49ers football.

The team has been assembled, the coaching staff hired and the stadium constructed. Tail-gating Niner Nation fans are at the ready.

Now it’s time to play.

When the 49ers face Campbell on Aug. 31 at a sold-out Richardson Stadium in their inaugural game, years of planning and preparation – and dreaming – will be realized.

Charlotte is thinking big with its new football program. The 49ers will play as an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) independent for two seasons before jumping to the Football Bowl Subdivision’s Conference USA in 2015.

“Oh my,” said 49ers defensive end James Middleton, echoing the sentiments of his team, school and thousands of alumni. “We are so ready.”
