There’s a lot of movement in the Observer Sweet 16 high school football poll after Week 1.
West Mecklenburg, a staple in the poll in the late ’80s, is in for the first time this year along with Mooresville and South Iredell. West Meck is No. 14, Mooresville No. 15 and South Iredell at 16.
• Four preseason Sweet 16 teams lost on opening night -- No. 6 Crest, No. 15 Porter Ridge and West Rowan and Statesville, two teams that were tied for No. 11. South Point, which was No. 7 in the original poll, beat Crest 35-16 and jumped up a spot to No. 6. Other teams on the move were Shelby, up three spots to No. 10, and East Lincoln up four spots to a tie for 10th. Burns jumped from 16th to 13th.
Crest fell from No. 6 to No. 12.
• Mooresville and South Iredell have been ranked in recent years, but it’s a rare appearance for West Mecklenburg, which was 9-4 last season under All-Mecklenburg coach of the year Jeff Caldwell. West Meck began the season Friday with a 69-0 win over East Meck and is averaging more than 50 points per game in its past five games dating to last season.
