Traffic alert: Johnston Road has reopened

Johnston Road is open again at Interstate 485 in southern Mecklenburg County after being closed for much of the morning commute due to an overnight wreck.

Now the big trouble spot is on southbound I-85 in Cabarrus County, due to a wreck near Poplar Tent Road.

The Ballantyne-area wreck brought down power lines and forced police to shut a portion of one of the region’s busiest roads.

Police were forced to close Johnston Road and the I-485 ramp after a motorist apparently lost control of a vehicle and the car struck a power pole about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. The crash brought down power lines in the area.

In addition to closing Johnston Road in both directions near I-485, authorities also had to close the ramp from the inner loop of I-485 to inbound Johnston Road. The biggest impact was on motorists coming from Ballantyne and from South Carolina, hoping to get on the inner loop of I-485. They were forced to detour.

That created big traffic backups across southern Mecklenburg County during the morning commute. Some of the heaviest traffic was on Ballantyne Commons Parkway and on Rea Road, which many motorists used as a detour. Johnston Road was reopened about 8:30 a.m.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Capt. Rich Austin said the driver of the car in the wreck was not seriously injured. He said the crash remains under investigation.

There were several other collisions Wednesday morning in the same area, with two wrecks reported within an hour on Rea Road at Pineville-Matthews Road. And a serious crash shut down a portion of Idlewild Road along the Matthews-Mint Hill line for a while Wednesday morning.
