The winner: When we lost power during summer storms, I brought the solar lights in from my walkway and set them in glasses to shine on the stairs and the bathroom all night. Edrie Knight, Statesville

Make mattress moving a breeze

When it comes to moving, mattresses are way up there on the misery index. Check out this simple mattress sling we saw in “The Family Handyman” (or woman) magazine. You slide a rope through a 5-inch-long piece of 1-inch PVC pipe to create handles on each side of a sling for easy handling and more control. Got another moving tip? Send it in and you might snag a T-shirt. Clever Staff

Double duty for dryer sheets

After you remove the sheet from your load of clothes, use it once more to clean the lint trap from your dryer. It makes a good lint picker-upper. Becky Roach, Albemarle
