Do you remember the excitement of having class outside? There’s a new outdoor classroom at the Anne Springs Close Greenway that takes outdoor classrooms to a new level.“We wanted to enhance our facilities with a dedicated, formal space for outside learning. We presented this idea and Marion and David Davenport became the donors and named the Marion Walsh Outdoor Classroom in honor of Marion’s mother,” said Denise Cubbedge, ASC Greenway director of development. The classroom is on the banks of Lake Crandall on the newly finished Trekker Loop trail. It features comfortable seating for approximately 50 people.“The classroom was finished in April and we used it all summer long for our camps. It has a chalkboard, table, fire pit and floating dock that the kids love,” said Suzanne Belanger, ASC Greenway director of camps. Campers learned about outdoor cooking, orienteering, compass skills and environmental education.“The outdoor classroom is a wonderful, versatile asset. It is a unique spot, secluded in the woods, overlooking the lake. Interactive learning here is special,” said Dr. Michelle Evans, ASC Greenway director of education. “The Catawba Master Naturalist Program will feature a lecture on fungi here soon and we hope to build outreach community programs in the future.“We also work with school systems to provide real value to what they learn out here and engage children in many subjects. This is not just a walk in the woods.”Cubbedge said, “Kids can study plant species, take water samples and learn how to build a fire without matches, all right here.”“The outdoor classroom will also be used as meeting space for corporate retreats, community meetings and other groups,” she said.“The greenway features a low ropes course, archery, hiking, camping, geo caching, mountain biking, kayaking and horse back riding. Future enhancements include zip lines and alpine tours.”The Charlotte Business Journal recently listed the ASC Greenway as one of the area’s top tourist attractions. The greenway had approximately 141,000 visitors in the last 12 months. More than twice the size of New York’s Central Park, the ASC Greenway has more than 40 miles of trails.Upcoming events at the ASC Greenway include guided horse back trail rides, guided hikes, Fiddle ’n’ Pig Shindig annual BBQ and Bluegrass Festival, Riverbound Race Series Half Marathon and 5K, Springmaid Dirt Road Race 10K and 5K and Fall Frolic Weekends.
