Central Cabarrus’ football team has started 2-0 for the third straight season. This week, Central Cabarrus makes a rare stop in the Observer’s Sweet 16 poll.

The Vikings have beaten Mount Pleasant (13-0) and Albemarle (68-34) in back-to-back weeks, led by tailback Kenny Purvis. Purvis rushed 24 times for 303 yards and seven touchdowns Friday against Albemarle. His seven touchdowns are a school record and one off the N.C. record.

Elsewhere, No. 1 Mallard Creek got a big 20-7 win against Butler at home to maintain the top spot. Butler fell two spots to fifth, where it tied Belmont’s South Point High. Rock Hill’s South Pointe High jumped a spot to No. 3 and Independence moved up a spot to No. 4.

In the week’s other marquee game, No. 2 Rock Hill Northwestern beat Charlotte Catholic 38-17. Catholic suffered through three interceptions and fell one spot to No. 8.
