Carolina Panthers set 53-man roster

The Panthers set their 53-man roster Saturday, but don’t expect it to be their final one.

During his years heading the New York Giants’ pro personnel department, Carolina first-year general manager Dave Gettleman was responsible for mining the waiver wire and cut lists to find players who could help the Giants.

And the Panthers’ offensive line and secondary looks like it still needs some help.

The Observer analyzes the Panthers’ roster in its current configuration:

Quarterbacks (2): Cam Newton, Derek Anderson

Gettleman didn’t see a need for a third quarterback, which spelled the end for Jimmy Clausen. The second-round pick from 2010 was waived/injured.

Running backs (5): DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart (PUP list), Mike Tolbert, Richie Brockel, Kenjon Barner, Armond Smith

Smith didn’t have a great preseason, but the Panthers needed an extra back with Stewart out until at least Week 7. Tauren Poole was the last back cut.

Receivers (5): Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell, Ted Ginn Jr., Armanti Edwards, Domenik Hixon

David Gettis was undone by another injury, a pulled hamstring he sustained before last week’s game against Pittsburgh. Ginn’s preseason performance made the Gettis move easier to make.

Tight ends (3): Greg Olsen, Ben Hartsock, Brandon Williams

Williams goes from the Portland Bible College basketball team to an NFL roster. Great story.

Offensive linemen (10): T Jordan Gross, T Byron Bell, G Garry Williams, G Amini Silatolu, C Ryan Kalil, G/C Jeff Byers, G Travelle Wharton, G Chris Scott, T Nate Chandler, C Brian Folkerts

Byers’ knee injury prompted the Panthers to keep Folkerts as the third center.

Expect the personnel at this position group to change, possibly before the end of the weekend.

Defensive linemen (9): DE Charles Johnson, DE Greg Hardy, DT Dwan Edwards, DT Star Lotulelei, DT Kawann Short, DE Frank Alexander, DE Mario Addison, DT Colin Cole, DE Wes Horton

Horton, an undrafted rookie from Southern Cal, gives the Panthers another pass-rusher on a front four already brimming with them.

Linebackers (6): Jon Beason, Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, Chase Blackburn, A.J. Klein, Jordan Senn

When Carolina kept 10 defensive backs, it shut the door on special-teams performer Jason Williams.

Defensive backs (10): CB Captain Munnerlyn, S Charles Godfrey, S Mike Mitchell, CB Josh Thomas, CB Josh Norman, CB D.J. Moore, S Haruki Nakamura, S Colin Jones, CB Melvin White, CB James Dockery

Out with the old (CB Drayton Florence), in with the young: Dockery, 24, makes it despite being sidelined with a thumb injury. Gettleman may not be done here.

Specialists (3): K Graham Gano, P Brad Nortman, LS J.J. Jansen

This group looked good throughout the preseason.
