Tree hits truck, blocks I-40 in Burke

MORGANTON – A portion of Interstate 40 in Burke County was closed for more than four hours Tuesday morning after a tree fell onto a tractor-trailer.

The driver of the truck was injured and taken to a hospital. The N.C. Highway Patrol said the driver’s injuries were not serious.

Troopers say the truck was eastbound on I-40 about 4:30 a.m. when the tree fell near mile marker 103. That is near the Enola Road interchange.

The tree split the trailer portion of the vehicle. Authorities were forced to close the eastbound lanes until the wreckage could be cleared about 8:30 a.m. Troopers say they think the tree’s roots were weakened by heavy rain in recent months.
