Pedestrian struck and killed on West Trade

A pedestrian was struck and killed at West Trade Street and Wesley Heights Way shortly after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said Demorris Carlo Willingham, 37, was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer westbound on West Trade when the pedestrian was struck. Medic and Charlotte Fire Department personnel pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene, No charges have been filed against Willingham, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Detective R.C. Gormican said late Tuesday.

“Alcohol is not a contributing factor for the driver,” Gormican said in a statement emailed to local media. “It is unknown at this time if alcohol is a contributing factor for the pedestrian.”

Police aren’t releasing the pedestrian’s name until family members have been notified.
