Man found dead in Shelby; 2 questioned

Shelby police have charged a man and woman in connection with the death of a man whose body was found at their residence early Thursday on the city’s east side.

Police have identified the victim as Earl Guy Hall of Lawndale.

Investigators charged Jesse Dean Hoppes, 26, and Simms Leigh Wilson, 29, in the case. Hoppes was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. Wilson was charged with felony accessory after the fact.

Each is being held without bond in the Cleveland County Detention Center.

Investigators say police got a tip through the Crime Stoppers message line that a person who was wanted on an outstanding warrant was at an apartment in the 1400 block of Vermont Street. Hoppes and Wilson are listed as residents of the apartment.

Officers went to the residence about 2:15 a.m. and spotted what appeared to be a body on the ground in the garage area. They also saw a man and a woman standing nearby. Officers determined the man was dead, and they took the two people into custody for questioning.

Police have not said what might have been a motive in the case, or whether the victim or either of the suspects was the person that officers had been seeking on the outstanding warrant.

Investigators ask that anyone with information in the case contact Crime Stoppers, 704-481-8477.
