Police search for fleeing driver

Police are searching for the driver of a car that struck several other vehicles during a police pursuit Friday, crashed into a utility pole at The Plaza and Central Avenue and then ran away.

Police arrested a passenger who also tried to run from them -- Antwaun Devont Oliphant, 25, who was wanted on two counts of larceny of motor vehicle parts, possession of a stolen vehicle, larceny of a motor vehicle, felony conspiracy, driving while license revoked and larceny, police said.

The pursuit started after the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police surveillance unit spotted Oliphant in a vehicle in Gaston County. Officers asked the State Highway Patrol to help conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle.

Troopers initiated the stop in Gaston County, but the driver refused to stop, police said. Troopers followed the vehicle, and a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police helicopter assisted in the pursuit.

A motorist in another vehicle that was struck by the suspects’ car suffered minor injuries, police said.

Police ask anyone with information on Oliphant or the identity of the driver to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
