When Paula Hughes introduced her older brother to his wife, she never expected he’d return the favor. However, it was Clayton Hughes who introduced his sister to John Kendrach. “That was the first time something like that had ever happened and it worked,” says Paula. Three years later, Paula and John celebrated an intimate proposal in the comfort of their home.

The couple knew they wanted to keep things simple, and when Paula’s best friend Rebecca Petty Moffitt offered Reverie Farms, Richard Petty’s family farm, they knew they’d found their venue. Paula had always wanted to marry outside by the water, and since the farm also belonged to family friends, it made for the perfect location.

For Paula, celebrating her marriage with the Pettys brought back a lot of family memories. Although Lynda Petty was too sick to attend the wedding itself, the couple was still able to see her on the day. “I got to give her a piece of our wedding cake, give her a hug, and introduce her to John,” she says. “It was so precious.” During the ceremony, Paula was also invited to carry the Petty family bible. It had been handed down through the Petty family for 200 years and is a treasured family heirloom. “All in the family have been married with it and I couldn’t thank Rebecca enough,” Paula says.

Paula and John agree that waiting to marry made the experience unforgettable. “You value moments like these when you’re older,” she says. “Neither of us had ever been engaged, which made it even more special for us. It couldn’t have been a better wedding day.”
