Sip of the Week

Barrel-Aged People’s Porter, Foothills Brewing, Winston-Salem

About $6.99 for a 22-ounce bottle.

Some barrel-aged beers can run $15 a bottle or more – if you’re even able to get your hands on them. Foothills Bourbon Barrel-Aged People’s Porter can be found in most local bottle shops for half that, making it one of the best values in the style. People’s Porter has notes of cola, coffee and chocolate. Aging it in a combination of Buffalo Trace and Pappy Van Winkle barrels adds vanilla and oaky sweetness, with a warming touch of booze on the finish. As a porter, it’s naturally a little thinner than most stouts, and at only 6 percent alcohol by volume, it’s one of the more approachable barrel-aged beers. Daniel Hartis
