Rowan County authorities have accused a man of stealing gutters and downspouts from several churches, apparently in hopes of selling the items for their copper value.
Investigators say Nathaniel Lee Lynn, 34, was taken into custody Tuesday at a residence on Percy Lane near Rockwell. He was charged with several counts of larceny, deputies say.
According to authorities, the sheriff’s office received reports in early August about the theft of copper downspouts from Salem Lutheran Church on Sherrills Ford Road. Detectives, who had begun conducting overnight surveillance at several churches in western Rowan County, then were told of downspout thefts last Friday from Nazareth Community Church and the Nazareth Children’s Home.
Deputies say their investigation began to focus on Lynn, and when he was taken into custody, they say, authorities found evidence linking Lynn to the Salem Lutheran and Nazareth Community church thefts.
Detectives ask that anyone with information in the case contact them at 704-216-8706 or 704-216-8687.
