Richard and Donna Dalrymple of Huntersville plan to have the vacation of their lives this weekend in Atlantic City, N.J.That’s because they’ll be cheering on their 23-year-old granddaughter as she vies for the Miss America crown on Sept. 15. Their granddaughter, Ivana Hall, is Miss Texas.“I can’t take credit for her good looks or brains or being in front of the camera,” Richard Dalrymple, 69, said with a smile, “but she is a good kid.”Hall and her brother, Ethan, 25, were born and grew up in Texas. Their mom, Nicole Dalrymple Hall, is the oldest of the Dalrymples’ two daughters. The family lives in Cedar Hill, south of Dallas.Richard Dalrymple said his granddaughter has often visited the couple over the years – first when the Dalrymples lived in the New York metropolitan area and since they moved to Huntersville in 2005. The couple lives in the Cashion Woods subdivision.Richard Dalrymple is known for his love and preservation of jazz.At WHIP 1350 AM in Mooresville, he hosts his Saturday Morning Jazz Party show 9-11:30 a.m. He plays an average of 26 songs per show and shares with listeners his near-encyclopedic knowledge of the lives of the musicians he plays. He started the show four years ago at the nudging of his barber, David Beatty, owner of Beatty’s Barber Shop and Sales on Statesville Road in Huntersville. Dalrymple was always talking about jazz and its famous musicians.Dalrymple said he planned to pre-record his Sept. 14 show because that’s the day he and his wife plan to head to Atlantic City.Besides good looks and brains, Dalrymple said, his granddaughter has always had a caring heart. She was 15 when she visited the couple in Huntersville just before their home was built. Richard Dalrymple mentioned how several trees would have to be chopped down to make way for the house.“‘Grandpa, you can’t do that, because they’re living things,’” Dalrymple recalled his granddaughter telling him.Dalrymple said he and his wife were “shocked and thrilled” watching the webcast of the Miss Texas pageant on July 6 and seeing their granddaughter win. Hall entered the 78th Miss Texas Scholarship Pageant as Miss North Texas. The pageant featured 48 contestants. In Atlantic City, the Dalrymples will be joined by their daughter Nicole, her husband, Tony, and two of Richard Dalrymple’s cousins, who live in Brooklyn, N.Y. The pageant will be broadcast nationally at 9 p.m. on ABC.As he sees his granddaughter on stage, he said, “I’ll think of the pleasure this is giving us, and the pleasure my parents and grandparents gave to me growing up and just how proud they would be.”
