So five SEC players have been implicated by Fox Sports as having received improper benefits. This following Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel’s brief suspension for autograph-signing improprieties. The best that can be said for all that is that at least the news coming out of Oklahoma State this week has shifted the attention from the SEC to the Big 12.
Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt needs to be the game South Carolina gets defensive Jadeveon Clowney involved (he’s got six tackles and one sack this season). His Heisman Trophy chances are rapidly vanishing.
Tennessee will have its hands full with No. 2 Oregon’s high-octane offense in Eugene. The Vols got an excellent game last week against Western Kentucky from defensive back Brian Randolph, who had two interceptions and eight tackles. Tennessee forced seven Hilltoppers turnovers, including four on consecutive possessions.
Three to watch
Vanderbilt (0-1, 1-1) at No. 13 South Carolina (0-1, 1-1)
7 p.m., ESPN
There’s unsightly infighting going on in Columbia, with defensive coaches squabbling during last week’s loss at Georgia. And Vanderbilt usually gives the Gamecocks problems.
No. 7 Louisville (2-0) at Kentucky (1-1)
This battle of the Bluegrass could get ugly for the Wildcats if they can’t figure out a way to handle Cardinals quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who already has nine TD passes.
No. 25 Mississippi (2-0) at Texas (1-1)
The seat is hot for Longhorns coach Mack Brown, who fired defensive coordinator Manny Diaz after a 40-21 loss at Brigham Young last week. This game is available only on the Longhorn Network, although some stations in Mississippi are picking it up.
What’s at stake
Early-season control of the Western Division at College Station, where Texas A&M is host to Alabama. South Carolina can’t afford to go 0-2 in the East, which would be the case if the Gamecocks lost to Vandy.
