On Thursday and Friday, three of the top five teams in the Observer Sweet 16 high school football poll lost. That caused a major shakeup this week.
North Rowan, a 2A team, is new to the poll. North Rowan beat 4A Davie County 28-13 Friday.
Hough and West Mecklenburg took big jump this week. West Mecklenburg beat Independence 40-33 Thursday, beating the Patriots for the first time since 1997. At 4-0, West Meck is off to its best start since 2004.
Hough, which was off this week, jumped four spots to a school-best No. 3. The Hawks are off this week before playing Ardrey Kell at Waddell on Sept. 27.
