Forget your fancy imports. North Carolina is awash in locally crafted—and potent—vodka, gin, rum, whisky, and even moonshine.

Southern Artisan Spirits

This family-owned distillery in Kings Mountain launched with its spearmint-heavy and quickly popular Cardinal Gin and has plans for more spirits soon.

Blue Ridge Distilling Co.

Distilled on a family farm in Western North Carolina, this spot’s Defiant American Single Malt Whisky features sweet hints of vanilla and caramel honey.

Muddy River Distillery

Located on the banks of the Catawba River, this Belmont based distillery was the first in North Carolina to turn out batches of craft rum.

Troy & Sons Distillers

This Asheville distillery’s small batch moonshine made with locally-sourced corn put them on the mixology map.

Top of the Hill Distillery

Dry gin, smooth vodka, and wheat whiskey have made this Chapel Hill distillery a favorite for the spirited set.

Covington Spirits

How’s this for vodka with a twist? This rural eastern North Carolina distillery creates its vodka using sweet potatoes.
