Today’s traffic: I-85 traffic recovering

Interstate 85 was the trouble spot for commuters earlier this Wednesday morning, but motorists are finding problems in other places at 8:45 a.m.

A collision on southbound Interstate 77 near Gilead Road (Exit 23) in Huntersville is slowing traffic in that area.

And police are working to clear a collision on inbound East Independence Boulevard at I-485 in Matthews. That wreck is causing backups into Union County.

Earlier, a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and injuries was the problem on southbound I-85. The collision was reported about 7:10 a.m., and it snarled traffic for more than 6 miles at one point.

The vehicles were cleared shortly before 8 a.m., and traffic – while still slow at 8:20 a.m. – is improving. However, backups stretch for more than 15 miles, into Cabarrus County.

The same is true on northbound I-85 in Gaston County. A wreck about 6:45 a.m. near mile marker 19 (N.C. 7, east Gastonia) snarled traffic for about 7 miles at one point. That crash also has been cleared, and traffic flow is improving.

There also are several other wrecks in the area.

The 8:45 a.m. update is below:

Road work today: Motorists will encounter delays either today or Thursday south of downtown Matthews. Crews will be doing advance work for a widening project at the corner of South Trade Street and Fullwood Avenue. Town officials say the work will take place during the daytime, but they aren’t sure which day. Motorists should consider using alternate routes around the intersection.
