A Caldwell County woman with three previous DWI convictions was sentenced to more than 14 years in prison Tuesday after being convicted in connection with an April 2012 wreck that killed a Hickory man.
April Cheri Childers, 37, of Granite Falls, was found guilty in Catawba County Superior Court of second-degree murder and aggravated felony serious injury by motor vehicle, prosecutors say.
According to trial testimony, Childers was under the influence of controlled substances on April 13, 2012, when the vehicle she was driving on southbound N.C. 127 crossed the center line. Childers vehicle struck a northbound car driven by Ashley Britt, 32.
Britt was killed, and both Childers and a passenger in her vehicle were injured.
Prosecutors say Childers previously had been convicted of DWI in May 1997 in Burke County, in July 2003 in Caldwell County, and in May 2006 in Catawba County.
Judge Marvin Pope sentenced Childers to between 14 years 2 months and 18 years in prison.
