CONCORD Concord Spiders sophomore quarterback Keenan Black managed a solid game. Concords defense took up residence in the South Rowan Raiders backfield.
And running back Rocky Reid ran for a bunch more yards as the Spiders registered a 34-13 victory over the visiting Raiders in high school football Friday.
With 216 yards on 19 carries, Reid recorded his second straight 200-yard game and third of the year. He covered 300 yards against Hickory Ridge last week and has 849 yards on the season.
Concord enters next weeks visit to East Rowan with a 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the South Piedmont 3A Conference. The Spiders defeated the Mustangs in the state 3A quarterfinals last year 21-20 in overtime.
Against South Rowan (0-4, 0-2), Reid scored on Concords first offensive play. From the Concord 45, Reid took a handoff and quickly bounced outside to the left. He rambled to the endzone untouched for a 7-0 Spiders lead less than two minutes into the game.
South Rowan orchestrated a 71-yard scoring drive near the end of the first period. Two Concord 15-yard penalties far outweighed the two illegal procedure calls assessed to South Rowan.
A 15-yard screen pass from Aaron Kennerly to Dominique Bost on third-and-12 early in the possession helped the Raiders sustain the drive. Another screen play completed the drive.
From the Concord 21, Kennerly was quickly under a heavy rush but he dished the ball to Derrick Blackwell who reached the endzone easily.
Both Spiders second quarter scoring drives started in South Rowan territory. Black, who ran for a second half touchdown and passed for two two-point conversions, completed both of his second quarter passes for touchdowns as the Spiders built a 19-7 halftime lead.
At the South 12-yard line, Myles Neils had to leap for a short Black pass and nearly lost his balance in the backfield. Neils regained his composure and scooted by the Raiders defense to the endzone with nine minutes, seven seconds left in the quarter.
On Concords next possession, Reid rushed for 30 yards on two plays as the Spiders reached the Raiders 6. On second down, Black faked a handoff to Reid and found a wide-open Jerry Burk in the back of the endzone.
Reid ran for 148 yards on 10 carries in the first half. Kennerly completed six of his 11 pass attempts before halftime for 83 yards.
For the game, Kennerly threw for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 12-24 passing. But Concord sacked him seven times as he lost 36 yards on 14 carries.
The Spiders held South Rowan to 24 yards rushing on 39 carries.
