CULLOWHEE Troy Mitchell threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns to lead Western Carolina past Mars Hill 30-23 Saturday.
Mitchell, who was 20-for-35, found wide receiver Karnorris Benson for nine receptions for 212 yards and three scores.
Trailing 10-0, the Lions scored 21 unanswered points during the second half before Mitchell connected with Benson for an 80-yard touchdown. Two more Mitchell-to-Benson scoring passes during the fourth quarter, including a 33-yarder with six minutes left, put the Catamounts back in the lead.
Towson 35, N.C. Central 17: Terrance West rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns in Towsons win in Durham.
West, who had 31 carries, got help from Darius Victor, who punched in two more rushing touchdowns on just six carries in what was expected to be a defensive duel. Instead, Towson (4-0) shut down the N.C. Central (2-2) ground game for 2 yards rushing.
N.C. Centrals Jordan Reid, who had 292 yards passing, connected with Marvin Poole for a 21-yard, first-quarter touchdown and Thomas Dixon for a 40-yard score during the fourth.
Sacred Heart 78, Chowan 35: Sacred Heart scored three touchdowns on defense and another on special teams on its way to a school record in Fairfield, Conn. Spotting Chowan (1-2) a 14-0 lead, the Pioneers went on to surpass the programs previous record of 62 points.
S.C. State 59, Benedict 6: The host Bulldogs (2-2) took advantage of three interceptions and Benedict special teams woes to build a 28-0 halftime lead.
Charleston Southern 20, Norfolk State 12: The visiting Buccaneers (4-0) forced four Norfolk State turnovers and junior Dylan Black recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.
Coastal Carolina 50, Hampton 17: Lorenzo Taliaferro and Alex Ross both rushed for two touchdowns for the host Chanticleers (3-0).
Old Dominion 59, The Citadel 58: Ben Duprees pass to Jake Stenson got the Bulldogs (1-3) within a point with 1 minute, 39 seconds left. Facing overtime or an Monarchs drive, The Citadel went for two and missed.
Lenoir-Rhyne 34, Wingate 13: Sophomore quarterback Miles Freeman rushed 16 times for 179 yards and a touchdown and the host Bears (2-1) used 422 yards on the ground to top the Bulldogs (1-1) in the teams South Atlantic Conference opener.
Newberry 27, Catawba 0: The visiting Wolves (3-0) allowed 192 yards of offense to shut out the Indians (2-1) for the first time since 1992 in the SAC opener for both teams. Newberrys W.T. Murden completed 17 of 28 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns to Corey Washington.
UNC Pembroke 41, Shaw 20: The Bears (2-1) gave up 533 yards of offense to the Braves and fell in the Cape Fear Classic in Wilmington.
Saint Augustines 35, Stillman 7: AJ Gilford threw for two touchdowns and ran for another for the host Falcons (1-2).
Winston-Salem State 35, Tuskegee 13: Rams quarterbacks were sacked four times and threw two interceptions but dominated Tuskegee in the Cleveland Classic. Rudy Johnson was 15-for-22 with two touchdowns, and Charlottes Anthony Carrothers was 4-for-6 and threw a touchdown pass.
