Serving in memory of 9/11

River Gate Elementary's Fifth Grade Academy students honored the rescue efforts of 9/11 on the 12th anniversary of the disaster by delivering breakfast to Charlotte-area police and fire stations.

Students collected breakfast items that included fruit, pastries, yogurt, juice and coffee as part of their first of four quarterly service efforts this school year. They traveled to the new police station on South Tryon and delivered items there, then went to Fire Station 37 in south Charlotte, where they posed for this picture.

Students also celebrated parents who are members of the military, police or fire departments by reciting poems and singing songs in the school's media center.
