Cannon School’s Collom commits to SamfordCannon School standout Kate Collom committed to play for Samford University’s women’s golf team beginning this fall, school officials announced Sept. 13.Collom, who is from Davidson, is a two-time all-state player who led Cannon to back-to-back N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state championships.The Cougars senior chose Samford, in Birmingham, Ala., over Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., and Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C.Collom, ranked No. 12 in the state by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA), had a strong summer. She advanced to the semifinals of the North Carolina Junior Girls’ match-play championships at Bentwinds Golf and Country Club in Fuquay-Varina, and qualified for the Big I Junior Classic against a national playing field. Jay Edwards49ers in semis at Southern IntercollegiateTwo members of UNC Charlotte’s men’s tennis team advanced to the semifinals in their respective divisions during the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, Sept. 13-15, at the University of Georgia in Athens.Junior Forrest Edwards made it to the Division II singles semifinals before losing to eventual bracket champion Chris Helliar of Alabama-Birmingham, 6-4, 6-3. Edwards defeated College of Charleston’s Rodrigo Encinas, 7-5, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.Junior Alex Calott, who played at Ardrey Kell, made it to the Division III singles semifinals before losing to Barry University’s Eduardo Alfonzo, 6-4, 7-6.
