Tamara Jackson lost 110 pounds. Jackson, a 39-year-old single banking professional, said that her weight became a serious problem in her mid-20s.“My life wasn’t going the way that I had planned,” she said. “I had to move back in with my parents for a period of time, and I used a behavior that I learned from childhood: When you feel sad, find something you love to eat.”At the end of 2007, when she was visiting her mother in Richmond, Va., Jackson went to have a required physical to get into graduate school at the University of Florida. Dr. James Miller explained the severity of her health: high blood pressure, history of heart disease, stress and obesity. Jackson said that she immediately began to re-evaluate her quality of life.She chose to focus more on her health.Starting New Year’s Day 2008, Jackson began a fitness routine using Beachbody home workout videos. Her favorite, Hip Hop Abs, landed her success story on Shaun T.’s recent infomercial.Jackson said that she lost 80 pounds within the first year, using Shaun T.’s workout videos.In 2012, she appeared on The Dr. Oz Show with celebrity fitness instructor Shaun T. to discuss her weight-loss success and demonstrate exercises from one of his latest workouts, Insanity.Jackson now uses her journey to better health as a way to help others who are struggling with their weight. She received her American College of Sports Medicine group exercise instructor certification in June. She has also received specialty certifications in Insanity and R.I.P.P.E.D.This month, Jackson, aka Coach Tam, starts teaching Insanity classes at McKee Road Park. Jackson will start a five-week workout series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26; 10:30 a.m. Sept. 28 and 2:30 p.m. Sept. 29. Single classes costs $12; a five-class pass is $50.Jackson also created a video blog where members can learn how to approach weight loss by changing their lifestyle, instead of dieting. She speaks about her experience with emotion-driven eating and how she combats the urge to eat when under stress.She said that the biggest challenge is consistency and that is why she is authentic in her videos. “I am not superhuman,” she said. “You have to do the work. You have to have a plan.”Jackson created an 80/20 plan that she shares on her video blog, which allocates 80 percent of the week’s calories to eating healthfully and 20 percent to indulgences.“I am here for the everyday people who like cake and ice cream. It is possible to find a good balance.”Jackson, who lives in The Apartments at Blakeney, said that after changing her life and receiving national attention, she felt that she had a responsibility to help others.“Everything that has happened has prepared me to do this,” Jackson said.
