The Charlotte 49ers (4-3-1) mens’ soccer team lost a close match 2-1 to South Carolina (3-4-2) in the Conference USA opener on Friday.
The host 49ers took a 1-0 lead when Aidan Kirkbride scored from 25 yards in the 27th minute. The goal was his second of the season and the eighth of his career.
A second-half goal by South Carolina’s Mahamoudou Kaba tied the game in the 52nd minute.
With 10 minutes to go in regulation, Braeden Troyer scored his first goal of the season for the Gamecocks for what became the winning goal.
The game was the 49ers’ first Conference USA home game since defeating DePaul, 4-1, at Transamerica Field on Oct. 30, 2004.
Charlotte 2, Florida International 0: The 49ers (6-3, 1-0) won their Conference USA opener on the road in Miami, Fla.
Maddie Kiebel scored for Charlotte in the 29th minute and Perri Bonner eight minutes into the second half.
Davidson 3, Chattanooga 2: The Wildcats (2-5-3) won their Southern Conference season opener on the road against the Mocs (4-4-0).
Becca Fisher, Julie Singley and Sarah Tuggle all scored their first goals of the season for the Wildcats.
