A 39-year-old Gastonia man is dead after he crashed his motorcycle Saturday night, Gastonia Police said.

At 8:11 p.m. Saturday, Channing Eugene Nicholson, of 1983 E. Hudson Blvd. in Gastonia, was traveling north on New Hope Road on his 2008 Honda CBR 1000 when he lost control of his motorcycle, according to police.

He struck a curb on the right side of the road and was thrown from his motorcycle. His body hit a utility pole near the intersection, police said.

Nicholson was pronounced dead at Caromount Regional Medical Center as a result of his injuries.

There were no other occupants on the motorcycle and no other vehicles involved in the collision, police said.

Police believe speed was a factor although an investigation is ongoing.
