Roman Romance

While on a tour of Italy to celebrate their birthdays, Angie Nance and Tim Vandenberg had a packed sightseeing itinerary. But Angie, a lover of all things Audrey Hepburn, was most excited to climb the Spanish Steps, as Hepburn and her co-star Gregory Peck had in the film “Roman Holiday.” Little did she know, the famous steps would become a part of her own love story.

After visiting the steps during the day, the couple decided to return after dark to see the city by night. As the two walked up the steps for the second time that day, Tim began to talk about their six-year relationship, and how much Angie meant to him. When the two reached the stairs’ summit, Tim dropped to one knee and proposed. “He did really good,” says Angie, “He really did surprise me!”

When the couple returned home to Wilmington, N.C., the wedding preparations began. Angie enlisted the help of Charlotte event planner and designer Ivy Robinson. “Ivy did both of my sisters’ weddings and we loved her,” says Angie. “I felt like she immediately picked up on everything I was thinking and made it happen.”

The ceremony took place in the Lumberton, N.C., church in which the bride grew up, and Angie walked down the aisle to the song “Por Ti Volare,” a song she and Tim had heard in Italy and loved, played by a string quartet. “An hour before the ceremony, I heard the musicians practicing our Italian song. I took that moment to really soak it in,” says Angie. “Little did I know, Tim was on the other side, doing the exact same thing.”

Angie’s parents’ home served as the reception site, and the tented backyard celebration was the epitome of Southern elegance. Complete with gold draping and chandeliers, the gathering also offered down-home fare like barbecue sandwiches, mac and cheese, and Arnold Palmers made with Firefly sweet tea vodka.

After dancing the night away with guests to tunes by Utah-based band The Party Crashers, Angie and Tim left for their month-long honeymoon road trip out West.

“Tim is my best friend, and I didn’t think we could get closer,” says Angie, “but that trip was an incredible bonding experience.”
