Reading buddies

West Charlotte High senior Nancy Contreras reads to kindergartners at Charlotte’s Byers Elementary Sept. 20 as part of a “buddy program” between the two schools.

She joined fellow scholar-athletes Makala Edwards, Maurice Grier, Austin Harris, Aaron Haygood, Julie Lieng and Devon Mobley in reading to kids in teacher Kashira Reid’s class and talking to them about the importance of education and making good choices.

West Charlotte athletic director Chris Satterfield said students will continue the program, in partnership with Communities in Schools, every month at different schools. The scholar-athletes plan to expand the program to include school supply drives and academic recognition activities.

Austin, a senior, said of the program: “It just warms my heart. It makes me feel like I’m doing something really helpful.”
