Burke man convicted on robbery charges

A Burke County man was sentenced this week to nearly seven years in prison after being convicted on robbery charges, prosecutors say.

William Lee Sparks, 45, of Connelly Springs, was convicted in Catawba County Superior Court on charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon and attempted common law robbery.

Judge C. Thomas Edwards sentenced Sparks to between six years 11 months and nine years four months in prison.

Prosecutors say Sparks was charged in connection with convenience store robberies last Dec. 11 in Hickory and in Burke County. A witness provided police with the license plate number of the getaway vehicle, and that led investigators to Sparks.
