Taste of Freemore
The Taste of FreeMore festival is 4-8 p.m. Saturday in The Burger Co. parking lot, 1500 W. Morehead St. The event features food from neighborhood restaurants such as Pinky’s Westside Grill and World Famous Open Kitchen, local beers by Four Friends Brewing and Bird Song Brewing, live music, children’s activities and more.
Food may be purchased with tickets, which are $1 each. Prices range from one to five tickets. Beer will be cash-only with an ID. This event is free, but organizers ask for pencil donations for Classroom Central. Parking in five area lots is also free. Details and parking maps: www.freemorewest.com.
84 years of Mallard Creek barbecue
This annual event started during the Great Depression, with three or four pigs and a goat, to raise money to build Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church’s first Sunday school rooms. A crowd of nearly 20,000 is expected to tackle 14,600 pounds of pork barbecue; 2,500 gallons of Brunswick stew; 2 tons of coleslaw and 400 gallons of coffee.
The 2013 Mallard Creek barbecue will begin serving at 10a.m. Oct. 24 at 11400 Mallard Creek Road. Drive-through lines will be available, as well as call-ahead orders. Details, menu and order form: mallardcreekbbq.com.
Smoked salmon recall
Big Blue Fisheries is recalling all smoked products from all lots, codes and various sizes in vacuum packages for potential botulism contamination. Consumers are warned not to use a product, even if it does not look or smell spoiled, because botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. Products were distributed wholesale nationwide and online at alaskasmoedfish.com.
