Panthers at Cardinals: Key Moments

7:35 left, first quarter

On third-and-3 from the Cardinals’ 4, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton fires a strike to Steve Smith, who drops the pass in the end zone. The Panthers settle for a 22-yard field goal by Graham Gano, their first points on an opening drive this season.

2:18 left, second quarter

On fourth-and-1 from the Cardinals’ 15, Newton throws to Brandon LaFell, who drops it after a defender flashes in front of him.

38 seconds left, second quarter

After Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson ends a Panthers’ drive by intercepting Newton, Arizona drives into Carolina territory. But on first-and-10 from the 23, safety Mike Mitchell picks off a Carson Palmer pass that was overthrown to Larry Fitzgerald.

15:00 left, fourth quarter

On third-and-3 from the Arizona 11, Newton throws to a well-covered Smith on a slant route. Linebacker Daryl Washington steps in front of it for an interception and returns it to midfield.

7:20 left, fourth quarter

On third-and-6 from the Cardinals’ 42, Palmer hits Michael Floyd for a 7-yard gain and a first down. The play extends a drive that ends with Jay Feely’s 50-yard field goal, giving the Cardinals a two-score lead.
