An employment summit offering professional development and more than 250 open positions is expected to draw hundreds to Mooresville later this month.The Oct. 17 summit will feature jobs ranging from food service and hospitality to health care and manufacturing positions, organizers said. Up to 50 companies – local businesses, national franchises and international manufacturers – will attend the event, which will also provide help with resumes and interviewing, panel discussions, information about available educational opportunities, skill trainings and nonprofit services.The summit is not restricted to Mooresville or Iredell County residents, organizers said, noting they’ve received calls of interest from South Carolina and Virginia.Jessica Stewart – an organizer with Mooresville-South Iredell Economic Development Corporation, a sponsor – said the summit is a first for Mooresville and has been in the works for at least a year.Iredell County’s unemployment rate in August was 8.9 percent, which Stewart said is in line with the state’s seasonally adjusted rate of 8.7 percent. The timing of the summit is relevant to many, as the Legislature voted in February to reduce the maximum amount of money unemployed workers can collect each week and the length of time they can collect payments, Stewart said.The timing of the summit is also appropriate, as many industries such as food service, retail and hospitality are beginning to hire for the holiday season, organizers said.The career summit is being sponsored by the Mooresville-South Iredell Economic Development Corporation; Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce; Mitchell Community College, Division of Workforce Solutions and the town of Mooresville. Kirk Ballard, chamber president, said the two panel discussions will include a discussion with human resource professionals about what they look for when hiring. The second will be panelists of peers who were unemployed but now have a job. “They will talk about what it takes to get employed in today’s market,” Ballard said.“They’re going to point them in the right direction with straight talk ... these are peers to tell you what to do to get back in the game. I think it’s going to very valuable.”Ballard said people are surprised to learn that they “are 35 percent more likely to get employed if they’re engaged in a nonprofit.“Even though you’re unemployed, you’re more likely to get hired because people are going to find out who you are ... when you’re plugged into the community,” Ballard said.Michelle Beam is the manager of the Division of Workforce Solutions in Mooresville and said many clients come from North Mecklenburg County.“Anyone who needs help and encouragement ... a fresh start or help finding a job” is encouraged to attend the summit, she said. “You don’t have to make six figures a year to come.” Dress for the employment summit is business casual, and organizers emphasized the importance of “dressing for success.”“A rule of thumb for interviewing is dress one step above the job for which you’re applying,” Beam said. A number of nonprofits such as Goodwill will also be providing information about services not related to employment, Beam said.Those who don’t have a resume can stop by any DWS office – Mooresville’s is located at 470-A N. Broad St. – for help creating one, or they can create one when they register at www.ncworks.gov.
