Voters head to polls Tuesday for Charlotte runoffs, municipal races

A handful of voters are expected to go to the polls Tuesday in two runoff primaries to nominate candidates to the Charlotte City Council.

Early voting has been light. Turnout is predicted to be 3 percent.

Voters will also turn out for municipal elections in Monroe, Statesville and Hickory.

Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.

Who votes? Only Democrats and unaffiliated voters in each district. Unaffiliated voters who voted Republican in the Sept. 10 primary are ineligible.

Who’s running? In District 2, college administrator Al Austin faces Rev. Brenda Stevenson. The winner faces Republican Darryl Broome.

In District 4, retired bank examiner Gregg Phipps faces Wil Russell, an assistant project manager for a construction company. The winner faces independent Michael Zytkow. Jim Morrill
