Front Street Baptist Church bus wreck survivor speaks from hospital

One of the survivors of a fatal bus wreck involving members of Front Street Baptist Church in Statesville recalled the crash in an interview from her hospital bed.

Norma Hellard, 78, is one of just three Statesville seniors not ejected from their church bus that crashed on their way back from Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

Six of her friends -- all members of Front Street Baptist Church died at the scene. Twelve other church members, including Norma, were injured.

Hellard said she had fallen asleep after reading a book when the wreck occurred.

“The first thing I remember is flying through the air,” Hellard said.

She said she remembered the smoke and fumes and worried the bus might catch fire. Hellard said she sustained five broken ribs, two fractures to her pelvic bone and other injuries.

With flowers and a card from kindergartners to comfort her---Norma leans on her faith.

“Well, I think that no matter where we are or what we're doing, god's in control,” Hellard said. “It doesn't matter what we think. It’s god.”
