Mallard Creek struggled with penalties and a few turnovers Friday against Hough in the game of the week in the Observer’s coverage area. But despite the struggles, the Mavericks won 38-21 to remain atop the Sweet 16 football poll.
The top two spots continue to be held by nationally ranked teams, with Rock Hill’s Northwestern High still at No. 2 behind Mallard Creek.
Butler moved up a spot to No. 3, and Hough, after its loss, dropped a spot. There was a little movement in the middle and South Iredell fell five spots to No. 16 after being upset 42-41 by Lake Norman (5-2). That ended South Iredell’s 12-game win streak, dating to last season.
