Davidson, playing in its final season in the Southern Conference, has been chosen to finish second in the leagues mens basketball standings. Wildcats senior forward DeMon Brooks is the leagues preseason player of the year.
The Wildcats, who were 26-8 last season and played in the NCAA tournament for the 12th time in school history, received three first-place votes from the leagues coaches and trailed only preseason favorite Elon. Western Carolina was voted third, with Appalachian State and Samford tying for fourth. The leagues media also predicted Elon and Davidson wound finish 1-2 in the league. The Phoenix is coached by Matt Matheny, a former Davidson player and assistant.
Brooks, a 6-foot-7 senior who played at Hopewell High, averaged 13.7 points and 6.2 rebounds last season and was named the Southern Conference tournaments most valuable player.
Davidson coach Bob McKillop is entering his 25th season with the Wildcats, who move to the Atlantic 10 in 2014. His team opens the season Nov. 8 at Duke. David Scott
