A vigil for two victims of domestic violence

Advocates for domestic violence awareness lit candles and sent balloons aloft in remembrance of two women who police say were killed by their intimate partners.

Marcia Winningham, 43, was killed on Oct. 4. Her husband has been charged with her murder.

Mara Garcia’s dismembered body was found on Oct. 6. She was 36. Her boyfriend was identified as a suspect. Police said they found him dead of an apparent suicide.

The event at Frazier Park was put on by Mothers of Murdered Offspring, CMPD’s Homicide Support Group and the Mecklenburg County CSS Women’s Commission.

“You just don’t let this kind of tragedy happen and do nothing,” said Williams, the founder of MOMO. Cleve R. Wootson Jr.
