Prior to becoming principal at AKHS in 2010, Switzer worked as principal at Northeast Middle for four years. He served in Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Middle East for four tours from 2003-2005. He will now compete for the Regional Principal award.Providence Day School Academic awards: The PDS Academic Team has qualified for the 2014 Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence National Scholarship Championship, after competing against 26 other teams at the fifth Quaker Bowl Oct. 13. Seniors Kendall Carroll, Alice Li, Jimmy Messmer and Michael Weinrib took seventh place overall and their team will advance to the national tournament. Upper School students Emily Ashkin, Matthew Bacon, Eli Barr, Maya Barr, Alexandra Halberstadt, Arthur Linne, Evan Marshall and Emily Young also competed and placed in their brackets. The team is advised by English teacher Jack Hudson. Charlotte Christian School Scholarship awards: Jonah Wylie and Emily Seaborn have been named the 2013 recipients of the Jennifer Hendrick and Kimberly Hendrick Memorial Scholarships. The scholarships provide full tuition for two seniors at CCS.Hawk Ridge Elementary Recognition award: HRE third grade students won an Honorable Mention in the district-wide contest for their Fire Prevention Bulletin Board. The school received a certificate, a $500 check and the Fire Department will provide a party for the students. Book drive: HRE collected more than 2,600 books in its Used Book Drive. The books will go to their classroom libraries to support the new Reading Workshop Program.Carmel Christian School Honor inductees: Upper School students Ryan Alderman, Katie Petersen, Thomas Avey, Mary Catherine Avey, Chase Currier, Katherine Queen, Trace Pollack, Joshua Volker, Ashlyn Uribe, Lauren Hunter, Kristin Wilkins, Katherine Southard and Margaret Lynch were inducted into the CCS National Honor Society on Oct. 3. The Honors Chorus represents the top fourth and fifth grade singers in the state.Charlotte Country Day School Scholar awards: CCDS seniors Michael Brienza, Alice Johnson, Christian Jones, Frank Kosarek, Spencer Lackey, Jill Levinson, Cody Mendelow, Erin Piemont, Jonny Plepler, Jack Siman, Bradford Weir, and Dianna Whitlark have been named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. Princess Sutherland has been named an Outstanding Participant in the 2014 National Achievement Program. Theater performance: CCD Middle School drama students will perform “The Elves and the Shoemaker” for the school community and for two community partners. The play, using a double cast, will be performed at the Gorelick Theater on Oct. 25 and 26. The cast will also perform at Levine Children’s Hospital and The Learning Collaborative Preschool as community service. Pottery donation: CCD will hold its annual Pottery Bowl Workshop on Oct. 24. Parents, teachers and students will work with guest artists to make ceramic bowls which will be donated to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region for their annual Soup on Sunday fundraiser in January.Proposed Matthews Charter School Community meeting: The board members of Matthews Academy will have their first community meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Women’s Club at 208 S.
