Police are conducting a death investigation in the Steele Creek area after they found a 42-year-old man suffering from a stab wound on Sunday.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police received a call for service at 5:51 a.m. in the 13300 block of York Center Drive in reference to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.
When they arrived, they found Scott Richard Connelly with at least one stab wound. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville and was pronounced dead by hospital staff, police said.
The initial investigation indicates that the victim and suspect, 44-year-old Dwight Lamont Burch, knew each other and were involved in an altercation when the stabbing happened, police said.
Burch told police that he and Connelly had an argument, after which Burch went back to his hotel room. A short time later, Connelly tried to push his way into Burch's hotel room in order to confront Burch about the previous argument, police said.
Burch stabbed Connelly after he tried to force his way into the room, police said.
Burch has been charged with second degree murder. He was taken to the Mecklenburg County Sheriffs Office, where he will remain in custody.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-8477 (TIPS) and speak to a Homicide Unit Detective. Detective Greenly is the lead detective assigned to the case.
