No injuries in Gastonia apartment fire

GASTONIA No injuries were reported Monday afternoon when fire damaged an apartment building, Gastonia fire officials say.

The blaze broke out at the Fern Forest Apartments, on Ashwood Court. That is east of Union Road, in southeast Gastonia.

Jim Landis, a spokesman for the Gastonia Fire Department, said firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the attic when they arrived. Landis said it took a crew of 24 firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

Three families were displaced, but they are being relocated in other apartments at the complex, Landis said.

Investigators said the blaze was started accidentally by maintenance workers doing repairs on plumbing inside the walls of an apartment.
