You could call it a sign of the times. But what has happened in this High Point Market to the Made in America Pavilion is also giving hope for the future.
This 25,000-square-foot pavilion in Suites at Market Square is occupied by 60 home furnishings exhibitors that market domestically produced products. For these manufacturers, “American-made” is more than a slogan – it’s their statement about the future and the returning demand for home furnishings produced here and across our country.
“We’re getting good response out of people wanting to buy “Made in America,” said Robert Deese, vice president of Lancer Furniture, based in Montgomery County. “They’ve had enough experience with buying some of the Chinese stuff.”
And Deese isn’t the only homegrown producer or buyer who has been heard expressing similar sentiments during this and previous markets. The demand for American-made home furnishings certainly is growing.
The story of the Made in America Pavilion is itself an indicator of buyer preferences returning to American-made products. The pavilion opened two years ago in Suites at Market Square, which is part of the International Market Center showroom conglomerate. That inaugural market, the pavilion contained 30 exhibitors. This market, the pavilion has doubled that number.
Sure, one might say the pavilion has grown partly because of its popularity as an exhibition space that hoists the “American-made” label high. But clearly, indicators show that many in the home furnishings industry and the consumers who buy their retail products are increasingly looking again at furniture and other home furnishings made in America because of their quality.
And that increased demand for “American-made” translates into more jobs here at home. That’s a good sign for the future.
